Unlocking Strength Through Mobility: Phil’s Story of Real, Measurable Growth

When people think about growth in the gym, they often think about lifting heavier weights or building muscle.

But some of the most impactful progress happens in a less obvious place: mobility.

Improving how your body moves - your range of motion, stability, and control - doesn’t just make you more flexible. It makes you stronger, more resilient, and more capable in everything you do. For Phil Cantilo, committing to a structured mobility regimen unlocked exactly that.

Committing to the Process

Phil approached mobility the same way we encourage members to approach any goal at CORE57 - with intention and consistency.

During the first phase of his program, he dedicated time both in and out of the gym to targeted mobility work, building it into his daily routine. As life evolved and a new job brought a demanding commute into the mix, that consistency became more challenging.

“Once I started commuting to downtown Atlanta a few days a week, it became harder to make time for additional mobility work in the evenings.”

But like any growth process, it wasn’t about perfection, it was about continuing to show up and adapt.

Measurable Improvements in Movement

Through consistent effort, Phil saw clear, tangible improvements in his mobility:

  • Deeper, more stable squat position

  • Improved lateral movement patterns

  • Increased shoulder rotation and function

  • Reduced pain in a knee with long-term tendonitis

“I recognized definite improvement in my range of motion, particularly my deep squat, lateral squat, and shoulder rotation.”

At the same time, Phil remained realistic about areas that still needed work, particularly internal hip rotation, which has been a long-standing limitation.

“I’ve improved, but I’m not yet where I want to be. I’m committed to continuing the work to fully unlock my hips.”

This is what real growth looks like: progress paired with awareness, and a commitment to keep going.

Mobility → Strength Gains

One of the most powerful outcomes of Phil’s work wasn’t just better movement, it was better performance under load. As his mobility improved, so did his strength and lifting mechanics:

  • Greater comfort and confidence with 225 lb hex bar deadlifts

  • Stronger, more stable 185 lb back squats

  • Improved form in double kettlebell deadlifts at 160 lbs total

  • Significant progress in kettlebell swing snatches at 45 lbs on both sides

“Gaining flexibility and mobility has improved my ability to lift heavily, especially in lower body movements.”

This is a core principle at CORE57: You can’t build strength effectively on top of dysfunctional movement.

When your body moves better, it can produce and absorb force more efficiently — unlocking new levels of performance.

Pain Reduction & Injury Prevention

Another major shift? Less pain and greater durability.

Phil has dealt with recurring lower back and shoulder issues for years, but all that changed for the better when he began this mobility-focused program.

“I haven’t had to miss a workout due to a tight back at all this year. My right shoulder — an area of chronic pain — feels significantly better. I’ve gained strength and can now more evenly match my left side.”

Daily practices like targeted stretching, grid rolling, and dead hangs helped restore function and reduce strain, allowing his body to perform without compensation.

Better Recovery. Better Performance.

Improved mobility doesn’t just help during workouts, it impacts how your body recovers and performs outside the gym.

Phil noticed:

  • Faster recovery from tough workouts

  • Improved stamina during tennis and pickleball

  • Better foot speed and court coverage

  • Increased overall durability

“It’s clear to me that increased flexibility and range of motion is improving my injury resistance and performance.” This is where mobility becomes a true performance driver, not just a “nice to have.”

Why Mobility Matters

Phil’s story is a powerful reminder that growth isn’t just about lifting more. It’s about:

  • Moving better

  • Reducing pain

  • Improving performance

  • Increasing longevity

  • Building a body that supports your life instead of limiting it

Mobility is often overlooked because it doesn’t always deliver instant gratification. But when you commit to it, the payoff shows up everywhere - both in and outside the gym.

When you improve how your body moves, everything else gets better.
