CHARLENE BAYER

Pilates Instructor

Two Words That Describe Charlene:
DETERMINED & CURIOUS

After 30 years in the Georgia Tech Research Institute heading a research group specializing in airborne exposure research, particularly indoor air exposures and their impact on health, Charlene retired from Georgia Tech to open a medical research company specializing in detecting diseases from breath focusing on cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. After selling her lab two years ago, Pilates training and instructing have become her passion and “retirement” focus. Charlene is now a Balanced Body certified Pilates comprehensive instructor.

Pilates has become a life necessity for Charlene, but it did not begin that way. She was a competitive swimmer for most of her life, as well as being hypermobile. As a result, especially with increasing age, Charlene became injury prone. Once she started working with an athletic physical therapist, she started learning about joint stabilization, and using Pilates for rehabilitation has been an important part of her PT training. Over time, it has become a passion of Charlene’s and she started Balanced Body teacher training to learn about what her body can do, and challenge it.  Charlene wants to instill a similar passion in others and empower them to learn more and challenge their own bodies. Because Charlene am a scientific researcher at heart, she loves the science behind Pilates and its movement principles.

Charlene has two daughters and two grandchildren. She and her husband are both avid underwater photographers. When she’s not coaching members, Charlene enjoys visiting Indonesia and other islands in the Pacific.
